PW101-2010 (Reaffirmed 2016): Standard for Testing and Rating Performance of Pressure Washers: Determination of Pressure and Water Flow

In October 1998, PWMA approved its first standard, PWMA PW101-1998, “Standard for Testing and Rating Performance of Pressure Washers: Determination of Pressure and Water Flow.”

In August 2010, PWMA approved an update to its PW101-1998 standard, requiring electric motor units to perform at a minimum of 90 percent of the washer’s rated psi (pounds per square inch) and gpm (gallons per minute).

PWMA PW101 provides a uniform method of testing and rating the pressure and water flow of pressure washers, the product’s two primary performance characteristics. The standard applies to pressure washers intended for the household, farm, consumer, or commercial/industrial markets.

The pressure washers covered by PWMA PW101 are portable, engine or electric motor driven, in which the discharge line is hand supported and manipulated.

“This new standard means that consumers can have greater confidence in the advertised performance ratings of pressure washers,” says John Addington, PWMA executive director. “We fully expect the major retailers to require compliance to this new standard for the 2012 buying season.”

In development for several years, the revised standard applies to pressure washers manufactured after Sept. 30, 2011.
